Summit of Awesome Day One (Part 1)
Thursday, June 3, 2010 22:41The first day of the Summit of Awesome kicks off with a tour of the Alberta Arts District at 10 am on Wednesday, June 16. Led by Hilary Pfeifer of Bunny With A Toolbelt, if you’re a newbie to the Portland area, or just want to learn a little more about your surroundings, don’t miss this two hour walking tour. Hilary will be your tour guide of the creative neighborhood she calls home: the Alberta Arts District. Bring your travel mug and we’ll start with coffee at Frock Boutique (1439 Northeast Alberta Street), and you’ll get the inside scoop on the best places to eat, drink, and get your craft on while you’re at the Summit of Awesome.
Afterwards head back to the Kennedy School for registration and check in at 12:30 pm. The Make Something Awesome Area will be open at this time as well.
At 2 pm the first round of afternoon sessions will begin.
Amanda Siska (pictured right) of Bread and Badger will talk on Finding Your Niche. Find out how niche markets are your friend, how to find yours and successfully market your goods within this frame.
Diane Gilleland aka Sister Diane of CraftyPod will lead the session titled Online Marketing Mistakes. This talk focuses on common mistakes craft business owners make when they try to market in the online space. Danielle Maveal will also be present to broadcast this session in the Etsy Virtual Labs.
Kari Chapin and myself will be talking about Getting Press for your Business. Learn about press etiquette, how to develop an electronic press packet and writing press releases. There will also be an exercise on publicity giving attendees three angles about their individual business they did not have previously.
A workshop with Jenn Hill, Jenny Tiffany and Caitlin Phillips on Craft Booth Set Up will be in the Gym. A craft booth will be on hand to teach the dos and don’ts of booth setup.
There is also the Screen Printing workshop with Christy Petterson (pictured right) of abardis in the Gym. Learn a simple screen printing technique and then try your hand at it yourself and print a design onto a handkerchief. Attendees are also encouraged to bring your own cotton t-shirt, scarf or tote bag to screenprint on as well.
