Recently, I found myself beaten by a machine.

With great excitement, I purchased a Yudu screenprinting system after reading some reviews that touted it as the savior for those of us who are running out of our no longer manufactured Gocco supplies. Like the Gocco, it is a self contained screenprinting device and it has the added bonuses of being bigger, geared towards printing on fabric, and it’s screens are reusable.

I thought I’d have no problem transitioning from Gocco to Yudu but I was very disappointed.

Before I started printing, I watched a few tutorial videos, perused the Yudu user forums and read the manual. I completed every step slowly and thoughtfully but ended up with imperfections in my three separate attempts.

I spent two whole workdays trying to conquer the Yudu and ended up with unsatisfactory results. I printed 20 “foxy like a crafter” tote bags and most needed touching up by hand and in the end, probably only 6 of them are good enough to sell.

I returned the machine to Michael’s fairly certain I’d never want to look at the monster again.

If you are interested in a more specific description of my frustrations, here is a rundown of the failures of the machine and quite possibly it’s operator.

The application of emulsion is probably the trickiest part of the process. The screen needs to be wet (but not too wet and not too dry) and then the emulsion is applied in a sheet like a giant green sticker that needs to be smoothed out. My emulsion didn’t stick perfectly in all three of my attempts. It was drippy once and un-stuck to the screen once and generally irregular in my last try.

The waiting between steps was expected but annoying and always took longer than the manual suggested.

The machine is exceptionally clunky. It’s very large and feels slightly cheap. For example, the little door flap that holds the screen in the drying rack never stays shut and the top frame part did not hold the screen in very securely. The screen fell out onto the floor once and I spent the next half hour plucking bunny fur out of the ink…. nice.

Once I finally got to start printing on my halfway-decently burned screen, I ran into problems getting an even application of ink. I tried to apply an even pressure across the squeegee but I always ended up with un-inked spots which forced me to have to squeegee again (thus losing line crispness).

All of the aforementioned grumbles were not insurmountable and I thought that I could get over them with some practice. Then, I realized that my screen needed to be washed between every 7-10 printings because the ink started to dry. Seriously, no. Washing the screen between printings is such a sad waste of ink and time (especially considering the screen needs to be dried after washing too). Yudu ink also only comes in tiny bottles that are prohibitively pricy.

The worst part for me was when I finally had started pulling acceptable prints, I noticed a pink haze had begun to show up around my images. The ink I was using was red and I speculated the screen was wearing down with use and letting a little ink through the blocked parts. I’m still not really 100% sure what caused the haze though.

I stopped for the day feeling bedraggled and went to clean the ink off the screen hoping to pull a better batch tomorrow with the same screen. Sadly, while I cleaned the screen, one or two tiny details of the emulsion lifted off rendering it un-reusable. Reusability was one of the main draws to me for trying the Yudu! My experience was altogether maddening.

I think the Yudu is a great idea but ended up being not such a great product. It has huge potential but didn’t make the cut in my book. I wouldn’t recommend it and especially not if you want it for making more than a handful of prints at a time. I hope that Provo Craft comes out with a sleeker, simpler, more dependable second version of the Yudu because I’d be happy to try again.

    I have a Yudu. It was tricky to get the hang, but once I got the hang of it I did much better. I agree, the emulsion is the tricky part. I tried to err on the side of too wet rather than not wet enough as I found it less problematic. It does take time for the screens to dry, but I usually did other things or used a blow dryer, which took only a few minutes compared to 20-30 minutes. I printed several t-shirts (mostly onesies) at a time& didn’t have the issue of the ink drying & messing things up. I think after my 3rd or 4th emulsion attempt I was doing pretty well with that process. It is big & clunky & the door doesn’t shut right with out shutting just so. But I really like it. I have probably made about 50-60 onesies all together with the same screens. Maybe you could take one of those classes they offer at Michaels or JoAnns. It always helps me to have a real person show me something in person. Good luck!

    Wow, my experience with the YuDu has been completely different than yours. I had never screen printed before using it & found that it was quite simple to operate. (As a former teacher though, I am one that REALLY reads directions, LOL.) I’ve made SO many things that I never would have dreamed of making before & am having a blast. I haven’t had any problems with the emulsion lifting off the screen either & I use mine quite a lot.

    From looking at your design though, my guess to one of your problems is that your design incorporates a lot of thin lines. If you’re using the 110 mesh screen you may have a harder time with that. The new 220 mesh screens are a finer mesh & should do better at that (and should be great for paper…I can’t wait to get one to try out.)

    You’re right that finding the correct wet/dry ratio can be difficult…it’s the question that I get asked the most on my blog. The great thing is that once you know it you’ll get it right from then on. Also, like Erica I use a blow dryer to speed up the drying time.

    also has anyone tried using standard screen printing emulsion with the unit? should work WAY better than the cheezy emulsion paper..has anyone tried standard screen printing inks? and a screen printing squeegee?
    i see peeps having issues that having a quality squeegee and proper emulsion could fix..anyone tried it?

    I just bought a Yudu as well and had heard that the instructional videos on youtube were much better than the enclosed DVD. I watched the DVD and then also watched all the online videos I could find (even the poorly made ones). I am glad I did watch ALL those videos because the DVD they send DID NOT spell out that the emulsion should only be applied in a darkly lit area without exposing it to any light. (Who works in a darkly lit area the first time they use a new product?)
    However, I can see where you had trouble and I have to agree with ErinBassett (who has excellent videos on youtube of how to use the Yudu) in that you chose a design with thin lines which would have a difficult time on a silk screen system. Now, saying that — you would think I knew about silk screening, but I don’t. I just realize that this process is meant for more of a “design” heavy project, not thin lines.
    Also, I agreed that the emulsion paper is difficult to use and expensive. I have seen several videos in which people have demonstrated using a vinyl material (bought at a cloth store) or emulsion liquid in place of the emulsion sheets. I will pursue both of these techniques as they only cost a dollar per screen vs. the $10 Provo charges.
    I have no idea why you had trouble with drying shelf door. There are grooves for the screens to be inserted on. Perhaps you had the machine lower than you could easily see into the door and visualize the grooves?
    To answer rodragz’s question, yes – people have tried standard inks but there are mixed results. Do a search online and you’ll find some people who report their results. Sometimes it has wrecked the screens or failed to work with the larger screens Yudu sells.
    Overall, my experience with only using it one time is that you need to do some homework and realize that the wider and cleaner the font and/or graphic you use, the better the project will turn out

    I own a 6 arm manual silkscreen machine and dryer and I too was intrigued by the Yudu. For me it seemed like an easy way for me to do smaller objects, in a increased amount of time, and in the living room. Going out to the garage gets old on cold nights when I just need a few things done quickly. What really is making me think of buying this is being able to burn my own screens. I found this site searching for if it were possible to use the maching to make screens for my 6 arm machine. 30 mins is not a long time at ALL to wait. Plus you get to clear the screens whenever you want and make a new one right then and there. I pay for my screens to be made at about $25 per screen, and it usually takes 1-2 days to get the screen after I give them the transparency. Fastest I’ve ever gotten it back was 7 hrs because a few people worked on a holiday. 30mins, and in the warm house would be my dream.

    I’ve had the machine for about a year. Here are some tips.

    -Don’t use the machine to dry the emulsion. A simple box fan does the job. I lean the screen against a wall, place the fan about 2 feet away and put it on a low speed. Dries in about 10 minutes.

    -Yudu ink is a rip off. I use Speedball ink from Plaza Artist Store or any art store in your area. Cheaper and you get the same results. Buy a ketchup/mustard bottle and transfer ink into it. I can do over 100 shirts with one $7 bottel of speedball ink

    - Go to any office supply store and buy regular transparencies for ink jet printers. A box of 100 is about $30.

    - Burn multiple designs at a time on one screen. Simply tape over the parts your not using.

    - I took the platen that came with the machine and traced it onto thin plywood and made 15 extras for about $20. You need several platens if your making a large amount of shirts.

    It does take some getting used to, but in my experience, it has been worth it. I’ve made 20 shirts at a time, and though the paint does start drying, spritzing it with water keeps it moist. The spray bottle is the #1 trick to mastering the Yudu emulsion as well. Wet the screen, apply the emulsion sheet, and instead of squeegy-ing and wiping water on it, just give it a few sprays. This keeps you from wiping off the green emulsion and from creasing the sheet, keeps it evenly wet. Also, when you’re pulling a design and it’s not evenly applying the paint, try putting a piece of foamcore or something underneath to keep your project closer to the screen and pull several times, you can put the ink back in the bottles!

    Hey all its me rodragz. I got the yudu at a black friday sale. Here is what I found. Its a great lightbox for exposing! Dryer sucks ..yudu emulsion sucks for sure. 220screens work great. Get speedball diazo emulsion..very easy and perfect screens. Buy a real squeegee made for screenprinting. I have used speedball opaque inks with the best results.

    I’m late to the party here and just stumbled across this article, but have to profess my love for my YUDU. I was pretty inexperienced in screen-printing, and had some of the learning curve you experienced with getting the emulsion film to properly adhere the first few times, but after that it was smooth sailing. Less is more when it comes to how wet your screen should be–it’s easy to add more water with a spray bottle if you find it wasn’t wet enough. And although, like any photo-sensitive material, you need to work with the film in a dark or dimly-lit area, it’s pretty forgiving of a little light exposure.

    All of the YUDU-branded supplies are overpriced. Here’s my list of money-savers that I’ve cultivated in the year and a half that I’ve been using my YUDU:

    Buy the YUDU-brand screens from Ritz Camera’s website. They are usually half off. I love how the flat metal frame takes up so much less space than a traditional screen. I’ve read about people who build their own screens, but I don’t think the effort and supplies cost would be worth $1 or $2 in savings.

    Buy capillary emulsion film in bulk from a screen supply company, usually at around 80% off the YUDU price. I get mine in packs of 15 from Atlas Screen Supply (google it), and they come precut to the same dimensions as the YUDU film, require the same exposure time, etc.

    As someone already said, buy a 100-pack of standard transparencies for a laser printer from an office supply store. Not only are they pennies on the dollar to the YUDU ink jet transparencies, but they work a lot better.

    Buy any standard screen printing ink and it will work. I’ve used Speedball, Blick and Vertex, and they’re all fine. I usually water them down a bit as well. I only have the problem you had with the ink building up on the screen after several pulls with opaque ink (like white ink made for printing on a dark background), but I have had the same problem with all brands.

    I just bought a YUDU at Michaels, new was $99.00. They also had 4 returned machines, AS IS, for $20.00. I also got an returned machine for $20.00 (planned to donate it to my children’s pastor at church) and checked that all of the parts were there. Well, when I rechecked it when I got home, the cord was missing. Called Provo Craft and they do not sell them, but said that they would send me one. What a great company.

    I have read the comments with interest. I am curious if I will have success or failure.

    Speedball ink is way to go! Also boxfan for drying is way to go! Unfortunately the application of emulsion to the screen does require a bit of finesse but gets easier with every application, a spray bottle works best for me. I lightly mist and if emulsion does not stay stuck to screen I mist the bottom side lightly and resqueegee the top so it sticks. “LIGHTLY MISTING” is key here.. Also there is a top and bottom to the screen frames, be sure you are putting the emulsion on the correct side of screen otherwis you will acquire bleeding of ink… If you accidentally burn the emulsion on wrong side a piece of cardboard can be taped to shirt platen to pad it out to screen( if you have no more emulsion or simply don’t want to burn a new one)
    I just finished printing my softball teams jerseys and they all turned out great! (15 jerseys and 20 t-shirts)

    I had some issue when I first got my YUDU machine but I have perfected many of those problems. I no longer use the capillary film I use direct emulsion(liquid) from silkscreensupplies.com they are awesome. You have to make sure you use a lot of ink before you flood the screen. I make perfect prints now and everyone is wanting me to make them shirts. Just changing to liquid emulsion makes the whole process a lot quicker and more enjoyable. I think you need to give it another try.

    Help  We are having all kinds of problems with our yudu. We finely got the emulsion to stick and we exposed the screen and in the washing off of the green emulsion it all started coming off. Does any one know what we are doing wrong.

    I have been trying to figure out why the reviews are so mixed on the Yudu.  I have a theory.  It seems a lot of novices are having good success with it and many experienced silk-screeners are disappointed and frustrated.  I am in the second category.  I think as someone who is used to traditional silk screen processes, the Yudu gets mixed results.  The burning IS the reason to get the machine.  It takes the guesswork out of one of the most difficult pieces of traditional silk screening.  But, the fragility of the emulsion sheets and inability to show detail leave the experienced screener very disappointed.  I lost my first two screens and I think it was because I was creating detailed screens like the one from this blog (which require more scrubbing).  It’s something that would be easy on a traditional screen that you could reliably produce hundreds of images from.  But, the emulsion sheets really require bold, chunky graphics and non-professional volume (20-30 images).  The best option appears to be the hybrid, using the traditional diazo emulsion on the Yudu screen and taking advantage of the Yudu screen burner.  I look forward to trying that option after ruining both of the emulsion sheets that came with the screen.  Overall, the Yudu has potential to support profession results with some adaptation, but in no way could be used in a professional capacity out of the box.  Good luck my crafting friends!

    I wish I had read this sooner.  I wasted a HUGE amount of my school’s program money (from a grant) on 2 of these machines and a bunch of the accessories — for use with my Special Education students.  LOUSY product.  We have only been able to produce one set of tee shirts — with great struggling.  The machines are now gathering dust.  The company offered me NO satisfaction.  Their customer service was no help at all.

    I can certainly relate to your emulsion problems!  I am currently workin’ on attempt number FIVE!! I actually purchased my YUDU from television – was it DYI ? or someother Infomercial site I actually don’t remember. 

    When I bought my YUDU I also purchased extra emulsion sheets, 40 extra to be exact.  I did do a project last summer that came out beautifully – after I bought different emulsion sheets — I was so frustrated using the emulsion sheets that came with the YUDU my husband graciously went to Michaels Craft store in the neighboring County and bought 2 of their YUDU emulsion sheets. They went on smoothly, burned a great image, and I printed almost 60 tee shirts.

    Yesterday I wanted to do a set up for some more tee shirts. But have run into the exact same crumby emulsion sheet failures.  This morning I tried calling YUDU but they were closed on the weekend. Sad to think that I’ve been SO frustrated with these dang YUDU sheets failing – that I completely spaced out it was Saturday.  However, patience enduring I’m gonna give it ONE MORE TRY.  This will be my FIFTH attempt at getting one of the YUDU emulsion sheets to work properly in the past two days.

    I have to be honest here, I just ordered a liquid emulsion set up with a new squeegee this morning. No, not from YUDU. I ran across this site while near tears at my personal failings with the emulsion sheets I have from YUDU.  Keep in mind folks, it works out to TEN BUCKS A SHEET!!
