So we all know that the Summit of Awesome was truly awesome, I had such a great time meeting so many amazing and talented folks. In preparation for my panel presentation Navigating the Art World with Craft I was reminded of the very awesome artist Andrea Dezso. I first saw her work at the Extreme Embroidery exhibition at the Museum of Art and Design.

I was blown away by her work, particularly her series Lessons From My Mother.

In this series she worked autobiographically embroidering text and language that illustrates the traditional Transylvanian folklore of her mother. Some of which borders on sweet, some on ridiculous, and many on hilarious. This autobiographical content mixed with the particular “lessons” illustrated create for a poignant portrait of generational and cultural divides and mother and daughter bonds.

I was particularly drawn to the work because of my own interest in the autobiographical narrative. I am also always interested and charmed by learning why artists move toward a certain direction in their work. Andrea began this series during a period when she had long daily subway rides – this process and scale of working allowed her to utilize her commuting time and create art all while getting to and from her day job.

She also has a very cool animation you can watch here. And did an awesome embroidered animation:

She is a highly inspiring artist!!! Lesson from Andrea are just what I need.
