I am a big believer that it is a mistake to overanalyze things and some things should not be analyzed on any level. I am not a lover of theory, especially art theory, which is funny being that the art school I graduated from is famous for being extremely theory heavy, so much so that technique classes did not exist for art majors.

There is a beauty in letting things just be. For instance, I don’t think that you should ever look up lyrics to songs you love. It is far more pleasurable to create your own story and meaning out of music.

What I love about this weeks picks is that they attempt to graph the un-graphable.  Or at least, that is how I see it.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a better use of charts than  Chad Hogen’s “Nonsense Charts”.    Check out more of his work on Flickr.

I’m a big fan of Shannon Rankin’s work.  She now offers an “anatomy subscription” in her Etsy shop, selflesh. That’s four original pieces of art for $100.  Not bad, considering it includes a map of the human heart.

Jer Thorp’s amazing print “NYTimes – Out of Favor – The Decline of Socialism” is “a visualization of the frequency of the words ’socialism’ (orange) and ‘capitalism’ (green) in New York Times articles since 1981.”

Available online in his shop: blprnt

I hope you’ve enjoyed this week’s finds.  I’m off to my studio to paint charts of misheard song lyrics.   Hope you are inspired to do something similar.
